It is reported that there are no reserves of rice in the warehouses owned by the Food Commissioner's Department.

Its Commissioner General Mr. Upul Shanta de Alwis said that currently the government warehouses only have food reserves which are received as aid to Sri Lanka.

Although it is the responsibility of the Food Commissioner Department to maintain a rice reserve of one hundred thousand metric tons of rice per year for the sake of food security, no such safe stock has been maintained in government warehouses for many years.

This has also been mentioned in an audit report issued regarding the Food Commissioner Department.
