• 1,996 housing units supported by the Chinese government
  • Housing for low income earners and artists too

Mr. Prasanna Ranatunga, the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, has instructed the Urban Development Authority to continue the implementation of the housing projects that were started last year.

As the country is facing an economic crisis, the minister has also advised to focus on finding the necessary funds to implement the housing projects without burdening the exchequer.

According to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, the construction of 1,996 housing units under five housing projects for artists and low-income earners will begin early this year.

These houses are being built under the loan assistance program of the Chinese government. The Chinese government will grant 552 million yuan of loan assistance and the agreement for that was signed on January 9 last year. The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing states that under this project, 1,888 housing units for low-income earners and 108 housing units for artisans will be constructed. These houses will be built in Peliyagoda, Maharagama, Moratuwa, Dematagoda areas and the housing project for artists is to be built in Kottawa area, says the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing.

The representatives of the Chinese government and the Urban Development Authority have jointly conducted the population studies for this purpose. House construction plans have been made by the Urban Development Authority.

A rough copy of the agreement related to the implementation of this project has been given to the Urban Development Authority. Accordingly, the proposals of the Urban Development Authority and the Ministry of Finance were forwarded to the company appointed for this program by the Chinese government last November.
