According to the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, nearly 120,000 people in Sri Lanka use heroin.

According to its president Shakya Nanayakkara, nearly 4 lakh people consume marijuana.

He said that while there has been an overall decline in the use of cigarettes and alcohol, the use of drugs, particularly ICE, has increased.

He also mentioned that only 90-100 people using 'ICE' have received treatment in 2022.

According to Nanayakkara, the majority of heroin and marijuana users stop using the drug without seeking treatment.

He added that only about 3000 people can use the facilities of the treatment centers.

He pointed out that there are about 40,000 new reports of drug, alcohol and tobacco use every year.
